THE WINTER GARDEN
Winter is a great time to examine the overall structure of your landscape. Woody plants, both trees and shrubs, are the “backbone” of the garden and provide form, texture and color throughout the winter.
Deciduous trees and shrubs, those that lose their leaves each fall, display striking silhouettes against the winter sky. Large trees such as beeches, maples and oaks, along with smaller ornamental trees such as dogwoods and crabapples, all add beautiful form to the landscape during the winter. Attractive tree bark is also more evident whether it is the colorful bark patterns of cherries, sycamores and Stewartia, the colorful bark of redtwig dogwoods and white birch, or the defoliating bark of the paperbark maple or shagbark hickory. Trees and shrubs which hold their fruit into the winter, such as crabapples and viburnums, also attract lively, colorful birds to the winter garden.
The beautiful forms of evergreen trees and shrubs add striking interest to the winter garden. Evergreens come in many different sizes from 100’ tall trees to spreading forms only 6” high. There are also a large array of shapes available including pendulous, pyramidal, columnar, conical, rounded and spreading. Evergreens add needed color to the winter landscape, including hues of greens, blues and golds. Evergreens also provide essential protection for birds and wildlife throughout the winter.
Taking a winter walk through Fellows Riverside Gardens is a great way to get ideas for what plants you might like to add to your own winter landscape. And throughout the winter months, take time to enjoy winter’s beauty along the many roads and trails throughout Mill Creek MetroParks.
What's in Bloom at Fellows Riverside Gardens?
Winter brings a sparkling new look to the Gardens. A blanket of newly fallen snow turns the Gardens into a winter wonderland. Red berries sparkle on the many holly trees and crabapple trees are heavily laden with red and yellow fruits. Birds are vocal and abundant as they search for fruits and seeds to eat. The South Terrace offers a beautiful, unrivaled view of Lake Glacier in its icy splendor. Visit Fellows Riverside Gardens and experience the beauty of nature in winter.
Go Green—It's Easy!
TIP #5
CELL PHONES | IPODS | MP3 PLAYERS | BLACKBERRY:
If you have an old cell phone (or similar electronic gadgets) you will inevitably upgrade it one day to a new model. What do you do with your old one? Make this year an environmentally friendly one and go green by recycling your out-dated electronics. You can get cash by selling it or you can support a charitable cause by finding a collection site for cell phones. You'll be doing yourself a favor and helping the Earth at the same time.
